By bringing together a group of Caroline Henbest's dear friends – seven Australian creative performing artists – we managed to ride out the global pandemic through a combination of imagination and resilience.
The resulting cycle of musical works and poems arose from a unique method of collaborative composition, and is a document of Australian cultural life in 2020–21. Reacting to an entire performing arts industry brought to its knees through multiple cancellations, the duo works explore universal themes of place, line, timing, air and progress. The many different creative approaches of composition and development explored throughout the project also reaffirm improvisation as a core technique for the contemporary classical art music performer- composer, and lead the way in establishing a natural interleaving of poetry, theatre, movement and music.
Following the live performances in April, From Nowhere to Now Here will be professionally filmed in collaboration with Agatha Yim of Polyphonic Pictures.
